Have you ever wondered...
- Why a village is in its present position and why settlements appear and disappear?
- Why different ownership of land has affected where people have been able to build houses in past centuries?
- How we can tell the age of a house from the building materials of its construction?
- Who lived in a house or area; where did they come from and where did they go?
- How did people make a living in the area in past centuries?
- How did people travel from prehistoric times to the present day?
- How has man's activities affected the landscape and wildlife?
We hope to answer these and many more questions in our series of special event weekends with talks, guided walks and themed tours. These are designed to interest people who want to explore, understand and appreciate the beautiful countryside of the Shropshire/Powys borderland and particularly the Long Mynd and Stiperstones area. See also our Walk of the Month.
Within a short distance of Thresholds Centre are several areas providing evidence of prehistoric life, together with the remains of mining activity from the nineteenth century.
Most geological eras are well represented within a twenty mile radius, and the evidence for this can been seen in the wide variety of building stone used locally.
The valleys, elevated plateau and ridges have given rise to interesting trackways and roads. Enclosures and land ownership has produced a varied settlement pattern with mankind moulding the landscape and wildlife to the scenery of today.
